When examining the discourse on Youtube of Gaming Youtubers criticizing Sweet Baby Inc, I largely found the criticisms to be compelling, especially when observing the in-game content of exactly what the consequences of Sweet Baby Inc had done to specific games such as Suicide Squad. The harassment campaign that an employee of Sweet Baby Inc, Chris Kindred, attempted to conduct on Twitter is also documented and they received a seven-day suspension for blithely violating Twitter’s rules. There’s been rumors that this employee has since been fired, but nothing confirmed and no statement of apology by Sweet Baby Inc about how and why their actions were wrong. When reading counter-arguments trying to defend the company such as Alyssa Mercante’s Kotaku article, all I’ve observed are equivocations with no meaningful substance. Moreover, when reading one of their employee’s tweets the day after Akira Toriyama’s death was reported, with them making the most insulting and disgusting comments to perhaps gain more fame, I was simply left with a strong feeling of contempt and any attempt at being “understanding” in my approach fizzled. They deliberately insinuated the most racist bullcrap as if a Japanese creative artist who drew cartoons prior to the internet ever being made, should somehow have had intricate knowledge of Western social identity politics in the 2020s. Their arguments were so absurd and asinine and the fact Square Enix chose to kowtow to these people instead of giving respect to Akira Toriyama’s wonderful legacy has made me seriously consider either only buying used copies of Square Enix games from now on or ignoring their games outright to buy from other companies that don’t disrespect Akira Toriyama’s legacy like Namco Bandai and their recent Sand Land game. To be frank, I don’t think I will ever even accept an apology for what they said about Akira Toriyama as it was deliberately malicious and hateful, since they began insulting him the day after his death was reported. I was indifferent and I felt that I would just ignore their games and move on; but after seeing those deliberately malicious and hateful comments and then seeing their absolutely insane – genuinely thoroughly unhinged, batshit crazy bullshit – about wanting to erase Quentin Tarantino’s films in their video essays; I want to see this company go bankrupt, for every single one of their employees to be blacklisted from the games industry, and for any company that supports them to suffer Concord and Dustborn levels of failure over and over ad infinitum until they’re no longer ever part of the gaming industry in any capacity, ever again and consumer demands to blacklist their entire company are respected. I hope none of them are ever able to find a job in the gaming industry ever again. I hope every single gaming company that continues to employ these dipshits goes bankrupt. I hope any new company or new name that Sweet Baby Inc makes also goes bankrupt, because I will never forgive them for that hateful tweet insulting Akira Toriyama the day after his death was announced. The timing and blithely insulting commentary say it all. They can go fuck themselves. Those are my thoughts and feelings on them as an organization and even upon their individual staff. To be clear, I do not support any harassment campaigns, I don’t support threats of violence, I don’t support rape or death threats, or any such disgusting behavior like what happened to female game developers in the 2010s; but what I do support is a voluntary boycott of their products like the Steam page “Sweet Baby Inc Detected” so that gamers like myself never have to bother with their bullshit when we don’t want it. Frankly, I feel nothing but glee from observing Ubisoft, Sony, and other companies constantly fail when peddling woke garbage that nobody wants. I was indifferent before and I thought capitalism would simply fix itself through the natural process of creative destruction, but after seeing that disgusting tweet insulting Akira Toriyama, I want them all to financially lose everything ad infinitum until they’re driven out of the game industry forever. I hold nothing but cold, ruthless contempt for every employee past, present, and future for Sweet Baby Inc after seeing that insulting tweet about Akira Toriyama. No forgiveness, no forgetting. Get out.
This brings me to the main reason for writing this, based upon my observations of the current so-called “culture war” that may not actually be a culture war at all. Unfortunately, due to Sweet Baby Inc’s imbecilic actions, there appears to be this tendency to blame US cultural values from subsets of the US population, such as those espoused from California, and I’ve noticed some Youtubers are using dehumanizing language and arguably equivocating on anti-Transgender lingo in some of these views. I want to be clear that it’s very scant and the vast majority of Youtube critics of Sweet Baby Inc have solely criticized the content of what they’re arguing, but there seems to be this pernicious undercurrent of overemphasizing LGBT – especially Transgender people’s – social activism as the cause of these impositions placed into gaming. The more ideologically extreme in conservative social values are likely making aspersions that accuse Trans people of simply being mentally ill as the reason behind these forced DEI measures in gaming. I’m concerned that some may even cast aspersions upon modern social science research or most humanities research in US colleges as somehow the perpetrator for groups like Sweet Baby Inc. However, upon researching a bit more, I would argue that these aspersions are unfair and these beliefs are false. To be clear, I’m not defending Sweet Baby Inc or their agenda of forced DEI measures, but what I am saying is that the cause behind why they exist and why they peddle measures that the overwhelming majority of Americans dislike is misinformed. Youtubers, and American gamers more broadly, tend to automatically think of these issues in globalized terms. My concern is that Youtube critics and their supporters are viewing this as bad faith actors from Liberal-leaning social circles learning woke and DEI nonsense in US colleges and trying to impose it upon the broader American gaming public. This is actually wrong. Instead, I would argue that what we Americans experienced was a clash of cultures and what Sweet Baby Inc and others of their ilk experienced . . . was culture shock. They’ve wrongly attempted to attribute their culture shock to nonsensical beliefs in Gamergate 2.0 harassment campaigns, when it is largely unjustified. I would go further to argue that the respective clash of cultures and culture shock had largely nothing to do with US Social Sciences and most of the Humanities departments throughout US colleges because the majority of Sweet Baby Inc’s workers do not seem to come from US colleges at all and most of them cannot credibly be said to have influences from US Social Sciences, albeit the Humanities might be an arguable point, but I don’t believe it to be a strong argument.
Sweet Baby Inc is a Canadian company, not an American company. As far as I can find, all three co-founders are born and raised Canadian citizens; all three of their co-founders list themselves as living in Montreal Quebec, Canada. This matters and it explains a lot about Sweet Baby Inc’s obnoxious behavior. The conversations about problems in the gaming industry are always being categorized in terms of “Western values” and “Western culture” being negatively impacted or negatively impacting other cultures like Japanese culture. There is some confusion for why; due to examples like Sony Japan contributing to the problem. Sony itself has been vehemently arguing for “globalized standards”, conveniently ignoring the fact that Nintendo doesn’t follow their censorship practices and seemingly isn’t limited by so-called “globalized standards” in the US, and then Sony got hit with a massive dose of reality from Concord’s failure. They seem to be going down the route of Disney by using nostalgia with the special edition of the PS5 Pro as a means of reclaiming positive feedback. Yet, the expensive price, the separation of the disc drive from the regular model, the fact the stand is sold separately, and the fact that scalpers took advantage of the preorders so that they’ll undoubtedly sell at exorbitant prices reinforces ongoing problems with the gaming industry. The gaming industry doesn’t seem capable of changing without free market systems of creative destruction reminding these companies that products must remain viable for popular consumption and they keep pushing for activism that isn’t actually activism; it’s for-profit marketing to protect Sweet Baby Inc’s failed business model. Can there truly be sincere forms of activism from a company seeking to turn a profit to justify their DEI consulting business? The cause for these incompetent business practices by Sony was likely Hermen Hulst’s utter ignorance of US culture, which he likely doesn’t know anything about. Hermen Hulst is Dutch and doesn’t seem to have done much in the way of travel outside of Amsterdam. The gaming news website IGN claims, he began interning with Ubisoft when they had first started entry into the United States when studying to get his Masters in Industrial Engineering and Management degree. Hulst himself claims it was only for focus group testing. He seems to have mostly lived in Amsterdam to eventually co-found Guerilla games and work on the Killzone franchise. In short, he doesn’t appear to have much experience with US culture at all but this notion of “Western societies” and “Western values” may have caused him to deceive himself too.
This brings me to the focal problem that has created a confusion of contexts leading to a clash of cultures that the vast majority aren’t cognizant of. The terms like Western values, Western civilizations, Enlightenment values, and – in particular – arguments about Free Speech as an absolutist enlightenment value have thoroughly confused what Free Speech means to us compared what it means to other countries that identify themselves as Western. The US public, British public, Canadian public, and many other so-called “Western” countries have different concepts of what Free Speech even means on a deeper, personal level in terms of value systems. We Americans are now facing the consequences of our ignorance for believing in these calculated falsehoods peddled by Great Britain, Canada, and other European countries that follow Eurocentric value systems. On April 4th, 2023, the Maru Public Opinion poll released its findings from a sample size of 1567 Canadian adults and 1558 American adults; approximately seventy-one percent of Americans believed that Canadians were exactly like them but “live in another country,” whereas approximately thirty-eight percent of Canadians believed the same about Americans:
This pervasive belief that Americans have about Canada is fundamentally wrong; likewise, any belief that the United Kingdom reflects similarities to the US legal system is also a confusion borne from our ignorance. Both Canada and Great Britain are Monarchies, not Democratic Republics. I know that comes as a shock and you might be thinking that I’m arguing semantics, but if you look deeper like I did, it explains much of why DEI consulting from Canada has become so controversial for Americans without a clear recognition of the culture clash that has transpired by everyone involved. They may claim to have parliamentary style systems, but those systems are subservient to Monarchic rulership and peerage. To be blunt, Constitutional Monarchies are pretending to be democracies and can only be construed as democracies in a very limited capacity that doesn’t reflect equal rank with Secular Republics like the United States. The UK and its various Commonwealths attempt to portray this as a difference of semantics or technicalities, but the legal frameworks and their negative consequences upon Free Speech are not trivial. Limitations upon personal freedoms are not trivialities. I’ve mentioned this in a prior blog post, but examples in the UK include the Racial and Religious Hatred Act of 2006 (and put in effect around October 2007 in the UK) which is anti-Free Speech, the connectedness of the UK government and the Church of England which is far removed from the US’s staunch belief in the Separation of Church and State, the fact the upper house of their parliament (the House of Lords) are determined by peerage and a special unelected committee and not by democratic process, the fact the British government can issue threats of lawsuit via D-Notices to the British press, the fact they’re still officially a monarchy as a government with British people officially recognized as subjects of the British crown and not as citizens, and the fact that the Royal family still holds wealth by an organization that classifies itself as neither government nor part of the monarchy which is unelected; these are serious social differences, not something that we should roll our eyes about. Organizations like Freedom House that create democratic indexes have done nothing more than deceive Americans and obfuscate the truth about Canada and Great Britain; perhaps it’s this mistaken belief by some unscrupulous groups and possibly unspoken racist beliefs by some ignorant White Americans that wish to label predominately “White civilizations” as not having the problems of “non-White civilizations” but such misconceptions belie the fact that neither Canada nor the UK are really democracies. This is important to recognize because the societal implosions and failings of both Britain and Canada are not reflections of democracy’s failure, but a failure of an old system of Monarchy pretending to be a democracy. If you doubt this and prefer to argue that I’m simply a negative person, or wish to cast aspersions upon my person by suggesting that I harbor some racially bigoted intentions against White people, or some such ad hominem falsehood because I hurt your precious delusions; I can say with full confidence that I do not say any of this to dehumanize or devalue anyone. I’m simply always attempting to focus on logical and rational reasons for why events in life happen, it is simply how my mind works. And, if you distrust me so much, then here is an accredited privacy attorney from Canada, whom you can look up the credentials of, who is speaking openly and honestly about the ongoing and very real decline of Free Speech rights in Canada:
These failings in Canada are directly related to their restrictive system of government that pretends to be equal to a Republic form of government. I’m not sure whether just summarizing the main thrust of the problem or sharing specific passages from accredited Canadian government websites would be better, but I’ve decided to go for the latter in this case, because when I mentioned similar problems about Great Britain, people – including fellow Americans – just seemed to ignore it on Discord and seemed to still believe I’m merely pointing out some quirky technicality on what is actually a legal fact that negatively impacts people’s lives.
First, here is how Canada itself defines its own government on its official House of Commons government website:
Their so-called Senate is not voted into power, unlike the US Senate:
By now, you might be wondering, what the fuck is “the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments” and who are these often unelected higher-tier legislatures of Canada?
And by now, you’re possibly wondering, what the fuck is a “Privy Council” and why is all this crap so filled with deliberate vagueness and confusing jargon? And, exactly by what “merits” are these unelected people basing their judgment on when selecting Canadian citizens that fit their political aims for Canada writ large? For this next part, please take note of citation number ten because it is the most shocking detail of the Canadian political system as it still exists today. From the Centre for Constitutional Studies via the University of Alberta in Canada:
The Canadian government’s own website on a brief history of the position of Governor-General:
And, in case any fellow Americans still have trouble accepting just how undemocratic this process really is, here is their oath of allegiance that they swear in service to the Canadian government; these two are the versions before and after the death of their previous Monarch:
This emphasis on Monarchy does have real-world consequences for the daily life of your average Canadian as shown in the Privacy Law video and the problem runs deeper; Canada’s actual Constitution stipulates in section III, subsections nine, twelve, and fourteen that actions by the Governor General are bestowed by the British Monarchy and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms listed under that pro-Monarchy Constitution states in Section 1, the following:
Thanks to an article by Triston Hopper of Canada’s National Post made on March 24, 2022; I was able to learn that section thirty-three of the Canadian Charter has a “Notwithstanding Clause” and I’ll just share all of it, because the details are genuinely disturbing and clarifies the context of the problematic nature of Canada’s rule of law further:
This appears to be the real reason why companies like Sweet Baby Inc are behaving so obnoxiously and secretively. It is not, as some might wish to believe, a reflection of Liberal and Progressive ideologies in the United States acting in opposition to principal Constitutional freedoms of the US Constitution in favor of some vague utopian ideal for communism or socialism within government and mainstream US media. Instead, it reflects a severe and overlooked clash of cultures on an international level between American and Canadian value systems due to the intrinsic differences in government structures. Sweet Baby Inc’s secretive nature is a reflection of the majority of Sweet Baby Inc’s employees behaving how they’ve been raised to behave at birth; they believe that the Canadian system of Monarchic government is genuinely good and wish to pretend to be equal to government systems like the Secular Republic of the United States. That is how they have been brought-up from birth to believe about their country. The immaturity and secretive nature of their behavior where they attempt to influence video games from the shadows is merely a reflection of the government system that they’ve been raised to believe to be genuinely positive for other people.
Why should this matter? Because obviously, we Americans live under a very different political system and I personally was very shocked when I began to understand how Canada’s government actually operates. These differences run so deep that I don’t think Sweet Baby Inc, or Japanese companies like Sony and Square Enix conflating Western culture with American culture (in their defense, this conflation was our culture’s fault to begin with), truly understood the full ramifications and it cost them financially. Canadians and Americans have diametrically opposed views on what Free Speech is or what it even means on a cultural level. For Canadians, it is clear from the verbiage of their own Constitution and Charter, that they are brought up to believe Free Speech comes from the Divine right of King Charles Phillip Arthur George Mountbatten-Windsor of Edinburg, known formally as King Charles III of Great Britain. They’re genuinely raised to believe that their monarch grants them the privilege of Free Speech, which can be taken away. They, like the majority of Canadians, may indeed believe that King Charles III is granted such entitlements of controlling other people’s freedoms by Yahweh, the Abrahamic god. Their government officials swear an oath to this fact and the Governor-General of Canada reigns by dint of King Charles III’s approval every five years. It seems likely to me that Sweet Baby Inc’s obnoxious and shady behavior is less about specious accusations relating to the mental health issues of Trans people and more likely that Sweet Baby Inc’s employees are simply behaving the way that their country brainwashed them into thinking was morally good or valid. Living under a monarchy might be similar to living under a hive-mind; the “benevolent” ruler bestows a finger of Yahweh to shed Yahweh’s light upon his or her subjects to grant them the miracle of his or her wisdom. In the same way the British monarchy covertly rule Canada, Kim Belair and her Sweet Baby Inc employees – the vast majority of which are Canadian and have grown-up with Canadian educational institutions of learning – mimics their King and behave in ways that they believe to be morally good, because that is how their government actively functions and has raised them to perceive the world around them. To be clear, I’m obviously not saying they’re covert agents of the King of Britain or their own Canadian government, but rather that their deceptive behavior and obnoxious actions are derived from the monarchic system of government they grew-up in and were taught to believe was morally right; it may even be subconscious behavior or behavior that they believed was “obvious” from the limited perspective of their moral certitude. Unlike in US society, they clearly didn’t experience any rebuke in their home country, or at least not enough to cause them to re-examine their actions. It’s even possible that their stubborn resistance to criticisms, which they wrongly seem to be confusing to be personal attacks in an electronics entertainment industry that’s supposed to be about mass-market appeal to generate maximum profits, is a result of their lack of mature notions of Free Speech.
Sweet Baby Inc and some gaming journalists’ attempts to declare the criticism to be “Gamergate 2.0” seems to be a reflection of this lack of understanding of what Free Speech means for the US public. Accusations of Gamergate 2.0 just seem to be a shield to protect their feelings and ignore valid criticism. I recall reading articles in the past when the actual Gamergate controversy happened, female game developers and female game critics reported that their homes and some of their families’ homes received numerous calls from random male strangers threatening to rape and kill them. That was real harassment, it was disgusting, and no woman or any other human being deserves to be treated that way. Being criticized for bad writing and business practices that American audiences dislike isn’t the same as suffering harassment. Obviously, I do not and will never support harassment or doxing of any kind upon any Sweet Baby Inc employee or anyone else for that matter at all. Nevertheless, Sweet Baby Inc’s insistence on attempting to conflate criticism with harassment, like what those female game developers and game critics like Anita Sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn went through, is completely unjustified. As long as people are keeping their criticisms focused on your games and your pro-censorship content in the games you influence like Dragon Quest 3 2D-HD, then you are not receiving harassment. They’re receiving justified criticism and the people criticizing them are expressing their right to Free Speech. As long as it is not threats of violence, in particular immediate violence, then it’s a Free Speech protection under US law, to the best of my knowledge. If any Sweet Baby Inc employee ever reads this: just because you don’t like their criticisms of your products that you’re selling to make money, that doesn’t make it harassment. Likewise, accusations by Americans who don’t like your products that you’re racist, or bigots, or grifters is also a protected Free Speech right and not harassment; customers aren’t your employees and you can’t confuse the laws between both. You have no right to silence them and your actions belie your complete misunderstanding of what Free Speech is in the American context.
It is important to make clear why the Canadian perspective of a top-down approach to Free Speech, granted by the privilege and discretion of King Charles III of Great Britain, is so alien to people of the United States like myself. Some of you might be tempted to believe that I’m being too technical or espousing utter bullshit for some outlandish purpose, but that is not true. I would argue that this fundamental difference in how Free Speech operates between the two countries is a very real clash of cultures to the extent that the term “Western” may gradually be declining in both credibility and as a coherent concept. Despite NSA wiretapping under President George W. Bush, NSA mass surveillance under President Barack H. Obama, the horrific conditions imposed upon Native Americans in what is an ongoing state-sponsored genocide by the US Federal government upon Native American people of the US on top of the historic legacy of deliberate genocide, the horrific history of Japanese encampment, the entire barbaric history of chattel slavery of Black people from the country’s founding, the legacy of segregation that still impacts contemporary abuses like redlining, the discrimination and dehumanization of Jewish people, dehumanization and discrimination upon Irish refugees during the 1800s, historic discriminatory laws that dehumanized Hispanics and Asians of various ethnic backgrounds, anti-Muslim bigotry after September 11th 2001 for terrorist crimes they never supported and do not agree with, ignorant violent attacks and killings of Sikhs after 9/11 – the dumbest part about this is that bigots were killing the proud religious group famous for valiantly opposing and deposing Islamic rule in India, and the violent discrimination and massacres imposed upon many Christian minority sects, and the . . . well, you get the idea; the point is, we Americans are free to speak openly about all of our problems without the approval of the government on what we can say as long as we don’t threaten to commit immediate violence and that’s awesome! Free Speech conceived as an intrinsic right of every human being and not a divine mandate by a Heavenly-appointed Father-figure is actually one of the primary benefits argued by President Thomas Jefferson in the Virginia papers. During the heyday of the Gamergate controversy of yesteryears, many twitter fans of the British Youtuber Carl Benjamin kept espousing Free Speech being absolute as their argument in my limited communication with them; I pointed out the actual laws in the United States, and the ones I tweeted the applicable laws to regarding harassment laws – with clear citations – corrected themselves and argued that they were referring to the Western value of Free Speech being absolute. When participating in discussions involving the New Atheist movement online, it seems that most fellow US Atheists and other English-fluent Atheists from Britain and Canada are generally referring to the Western value on the basis of Voltaire’s philosophical concept and many reference his famous quote. Some seemed to blur it with the American politician Patrick Henry’s famous words in his 1775 speech “Give me liberty, or give me death!” to emphasize what they mean. While there is some ignorance and conflation involved from gamers online and there was unfortunately a total ignorance of US harassment laws which may have partly emboldened the Gamergate harassment campaigns and doxing of female gamers during the 2010s; what American people mean by Free Speech is an inalienable, natural right that cannot be taken away by a Sovereign, such as King Charles III of Great Britain, like it can be taken away from Canadians. Whether this natural right is from a god or nature itself is a matter of philosophical and historic debate; the point is that it’s premised on being inherent in every human being and not bestowed by the capricious whims of a ruler. The two competing legal theories for the US judicial system are the originalist or textualist legal traditions; meaning the judicial branch can only interpret laws based upon what the text literally states or based upon the original intent of the Founding Fathers of the United States; while these methods of legal interpretation does lead to severe problems in and of itself that absolutely deserve to be rectified immediately by adding new Constitutional amendments to protect Native American human rights; the original idea behind the First Amendment as conceived by Thomas Jefferson was that free inquiry was a natural deterrent for stupid and harmful ideas. Most Americans utilize the freedom of ridicule for ideas they dislike, the concept of tolerance under Free Speech to ignore ideas that they don’t want to bother thinking about, and self-censorship for ideas they don’t care to partake in. However, the most important portion of US Free Speech rights, in accordance with Thomas Jefferson’s vision of the positives of Free Speech, was Free Inquiry. The right to question anything and everything we want, so that we rectify errors that we make and the harm imposed upon others due to our or others ignorance or malice. Here are selected portions, with bold emphasis added by myself, of query seventeen of the Virginia Papers by Thomas Jefferson:
At the common law, heresy was a capital offence, punishable by burning. Its definition was left to the ecclesiastical judges, before whom the conviction was, till the statute of the 1 El. c. 1. circumscribed it, by declaring, that nothing should be deemed heresy, but what had been so determined by authority of the canonical scriptures, or by one of the four first general councils, or by some other council having for the grounds of their declaration the express and plain words of the scriptures. Heresy, thus circumscribed, being an offence at the common law, our act of assembly of October 1777, c. 17. gives cognizance of it to the general court, by declaring, that the jurisdiction of that court shall be general in all matters at the common law. The execution is by the writ De haeretico comburendo. By our own act of assembly of 1705, c. 30, if a person brought up in the Christian religion denies the being of a God, or the Trinity, or asserts there are more Gods than one, or denies the Christian religion to be true, or the scriptures to be of divine authority, he is punishable on the first offence by incapacity to hold any office or employment ecclesiastical, civil, or military; on the second by disability to sue, to take any gift or legacy, to be guardian, executor, or administrator, and by three years imprisonment, without bail. A father’s right to the custody of his own children being founded in law on his right of guardianship, this being taken away, they may of course be severed from him, and put, by the authority of a court, into more orthodox hands. This is a summary view of that religious slavery, under which a people have been willing to remain, who have lavished their lives and fortunes for the establishment of their civil freedom. (*) The error seems not sufficiently eradicated, that the operations of the mind, as well as the acts of the body, are subject to the coercion of the laws. But our rulers can have authority over such natural rights only as we have submitted to them. The rights of conscience we never submitted, we could not submit. We are answerable for them to our God. The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg. If it be said, his testimony in a court of justice cannot be relied on, reject it then, and be the stigma on him. Constraint may make him worse by making him a hypocrite, but it will never make him a truer man. It may fix him obstinately in his errors, but will not cure them. Reason and free enquiry are the only effectual agents against error. Give a loose to them, they will support the true religion, by bringing every false one to their tribunal, to the test of their investigation. They are the natural enemies of error, and of error only. Had not the Roman government permitted free enquiry, Christianity could never have been introduced. Had not free enquiry been indulged, at the aera of the reformation, the corruptions of Christianity could not have been purged away. If it be restrained now, the present corruptions will be protected, and new ones encouraged. Was the government to prescribe to us our medicine and diet, our bodies would be in such keeping as our souls are now. Thus in France the emetic was once forbidden as a medicine, and the potatoe as an article of food. Government is just as infallible too when it fixes systems in physics. Galileo was sent to the inquisition for affirming that the earth was a sphere: the government had declared it to be as flat as a trencher, and Galileo was obliged to abjure his error. This error however at length prevailed, the earth became a globe, and Descartes declared it was whirled round its axis by a vortex. The government in which he lived was wise enough to see that this was no question of civil jurisdiction, or we should all have been involved by authority in vortices. In fact, the vortices have been exploded, and the Newtonian principle of gravitation is now more firmly established, on the basis of reason, than it would be were the government to step in, and to make it an article of necessary faith. Reason and experiment have been indulged, and error has fled before them. It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself. Subject opinion to coercion: whom will you make your inquisitors? Fallible men; men governed by bad passions, by private as well as public reasons. And why subject it to coercion? To produce uniformity. But is uniformity of opinion desireable? No more than of face and stature. Introduce the bed of Procrustes then, and as there is danger that the large men may beat the small, make us all of a size, by lopping the former and stretching the latter. Difference of opinion is advantageous in religion. The several sects perform the office of a Censor morum over each other. Is uniformity attainable? Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth. Let us reflect that it is inhabited by a thousand millions of people. That these profess probably a thousand different systems of religion. That ours is but one of that thousand. That if there be but one right, and ours that one, we should wish to see the 999 wandering sects gathered into the fold of truth. But against such a majority we cannot effect this by force. Reason and persuasion are the only practicable instruments. To make way for these, free enquiry must be indulged; and how can we wish others to indulge it while we refuse it ourselves. But every state, says an inquisitor, has established some religion. No two, say I, have established the same. Is this a proof of the infallibility of establishments? Our sister states of Pennsylvania and New York, however, have long subsisted without any establishment at all. The experiment was new and doubtful when they made it. It has answered beyond conception. They flourish infinitely. Religion is well supported; of various kinds, indeed, but all good enough; all sufficient to preserve peace and order: or if a sect arises, whose tenets would subvert morals, good sense has fair play, and reasons and laughs it out of doors, without suffering the state to be troubled with it. They do not hang more malefactors than we do. They are not more disturbed with religious dissensions. On the contrary, their harmony is unparalleled, and can be ascribed to nothing but their unbounded tolerance, because there is no other circumstance in which they differ from every nation on earth. They have made the happy discovery, that the way to silence religious disputes, is to take no notice of them. Let us too give this experiment fair play, and get rid, while we may, of those tyrannical laws. It is true, we are as yet secured against them by the spirit of the times. I doubt whether the people of this country would suffer an execution for heresy, or a three years imprisonment for not comprehending the mysteries of the Trinity. But is the spirit of the people an infallible, a permanent reliance? Is it government? Is this the kind of protection we receive in return for the rights we give up? Besides, the spirit of the times may alter, will alter. Our rulers will become corrupt, our people careless. A single zealot may commence persecutor, and better men be his victims. It can never be too often repeated, that the time for fixing every essential right on a legal basis is while our rulers are honest, and ourselves united. From the conclusion of this war we shall be going down hill. It will not then be necessary to resort every moment to the people for support. They will be forgotten, therefore, and their rights disregarded. They will forget themselves, but in the sole faculty of making money, and will never think of uniting to effect a due respect for their rights. The shackles, therefore, which shall not be knocked off at the conclusion of this war, will remain on us long, will be made heavier and heavier, till our rights shall revive or expire in a convulsion.
Thomas Jefferson’s conception and arguments in favor of Free Speech on the basis of Free Inquiry; his arguments about Free Inquiry itself being a natural deterrent and course correction for past mistakes to fix past errors; and the basis for it being personal liberty as a natural right. These are the reasons why “Western values” is a misconception, because Americans and Canadians have fundamental differences on what Free Speech is. It is more accurate to say that the majority of Americans have an unwavering faith in an ideal – the ideal of Free Speech being a natural right that every human being should have – than the Canadian social context of a privilege granted by the capricious nature of a King. When I first read the full text after seeing a brief quote on a meme picture attributed to Thomas Jefferson and wanting to verify the authenticity, I was struck by the profundity of his argument about Free Inquiry as the reason for Free Speech being a natural right for all people. You can imagine my absolute disappointment and depression when I learned that someone who I had briefly worshiped in heroic terms on the basis of his wonderful arguments about Free Speech, could then be so blind and bigoted with his dehumanization of Native Americans to the extent that the Supreme Court decided in 1978 that Native Americans living in reservations had no right to sue non-Native rapists and murderers coming into their homes to do the worst sorts of harm to them and that the local non-Native police nearby these locations would shoot and kill Tribal police officers because it was illegal for Tribal police officers to try to stop rapists and murderers, and that this Supreme Court decision hadn’t been overturned for nearly fifty years. A Vice article in 2015 even showed evidence of registered sex offenders joking to each other about this and how much fun they had raping Indigenous women while Tribal police had to watch without being able to do anything on internet forums. Sadly, it wasn’t until more Indigenous women disappeared at alarmingly high rates that the Supreme Court finally decided that Tribal police had the right to temporarily detain them, so that local police could make the arrest. Even though, I have been emailing and calling Congress for over a year now about this, no attempt at making the simple solution to correct this deliberate state-sponsored genocide by the US Federal government has occurred. That is, simply giving Tribal police and Tribal courts the right to arrest and prosecute non-Native registered sex offenders and any other non-Native people meaning to do serious harm, and updating the Indian Civil Rights act and Major Crimes act to allow for equal penalties comparable to if they occurred outside of reservations. Still not happening, despite my emails every single weekday to both my New York Senators for over a year now. I’m not exaggerating about that; I really have been sending them every weekday for over a year now. In the strictest sense of fairness, there have been piecemeal efforts that I’ve noticed; courts seem less likely of tossing out Native American lawsuits and cases, police throughout the US seem far politer when discussing MMIP topics in official statements, the Bureau of Indian Affairs seems to have updated their website to scrub the false claim that intimate partner violence was the main offender when the data they cited didn’t even support that claim and it was actually non-Native registered sex offenders according to local US news agencies, and giving back certain lands that the US Federal government either poisoned with mercury and didn’t want to face a lawsuit for or gave back due to peaceful protests about historic injustice when the land doesn’t negatively impact the government’s desire to use natural resources or the private interests of US corporations. While it is very slow in process and execution of fixing serious and ongoing societal problems throughout the US; the trend seems to be going in a positive direction for now. Both the prior Trump administration and the current Biden administration have made piecemeal efforts in signing pro-human rights legislation for Native Americans and they have both attempted to highlight the contributions of Native American service members to the US. For me personally, in terms of exercising my Free Speech rights, I can highlight human rights abuses regardless of how painfully depressing it is for readers who feel uncomfortable with the information I’ve argued. My freedom to articulate, question, and argue on the basis of Free Inquiry as a natural right and the recognition of this natural right by the First Amendment, which seeks to bolster support for this natural right and the natural rights of my fellow Americans, is fundamental and a foundational concept in our US Constitution. If only the US Congress would support the idea that Native Americans have a natural right to not be raped; unfortunately, they seem stubbornly resistant to that idea. Canadian companies like Sweet Baby Inc genuinely don’t seem to understand the sacredness of Free Speech values of our country, likely because they don’t understand and have conflated the foundational premise of those values with the understanding they have of their country’s version. The foundational basis of Free Speech is fundamentally different in both countries and that is what has led to an unrecognized culture shock.
Sweet Baby Inc employee Camerin Wild became notorious for their comment of wanting to “Burn the game industry down” in the early part of their presentation for Game Devs of Color Expo (GDOC) in 2022; this soundbite and mission statement by Wild was mocked and criticized throughout Youtube for justifiable reasons. Nevertheless, the exclusive focus on Wild’s soundbite in the early portion of the video was over-emphasized, because the latter portion was even more problematic. I skimmed the early half as it mainly seemed to be introductory information and then watched the latter-half of the video. The most crucial aspect of this, which is what caused me to do further research into the Canadian system of government, was that Camerin Wild did not demonstrate that they understood or appreciated that Americans view Free Speech as a natural right when they criticized Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained and seemed to implicitly argue for limitations that seemed obvious to them judging from how they argued their points. Their words in critiquing Django Unchained in the subsection “Blazing Saddles would Never” during their presentation from timestamp 19:08 – 20:48 were “Good genre understands that it earns its freedom from knowing boundaries and uses its aesthetic language to honor, reference, [and] subvert convention.” Emphasis on bold and the bracket added by me to both clarify Camerin’s intended sentence since they repeated themselves during this portion and to show exactly where Americans and Canadians have a fundamental difference in understanding Free Speech. Camerin went so far as to say that Quentin Tarantino hadn’t “earned the right to laugh” and went on to further say that Tarantino didn’t have the right to make black exploitation films. I’m of the opinion that they must’ve skimmed Django Unchained and hadn’t fully watched it, or perhaps they read a Wikipedia article alongside a few Youtube clips and judged it solely on that. I would go into point-by-point reasons, but it might be better to provide a video comparing what they said to the actual content of Django Unchained and a fact about Tarantino that they don’t seem to be aware of:
I want to be unequivocally clear so as not to confuse or misinform anyone about my argument: I’m not saying Quentin Tarantino “earned the right” at all. Neither Tarantino, nor myself, nor you the reader need to “earn the right” to anything. We all have the natural right of Free Speech and we all have the natural right to criticize, support, ignore, or voluntarily boycott whatever the fuck we want. Tarantino has the natural right to make whatever movie he wants, just as those unions have the natural right to boycott his films, just as Camerin Wild has the natural right to criticize whatever they want, just as I have the natural right to criticize this grifter nonsense peddled by Camerin Wild and Sweet Baby Inc, and just as you have the natural right to think either that I’m an idiot or that I’m making a good point about cultural differences among so-called “Western” cultures. Nobody should ever need to “earn the right” to make their Free Speech heard, nor their creativity be made to align to someone else’s utopian vision built on ignorance. Free Speech isn’t Free Speech if you have the right to veto what I say by claiming I need to pass an arbitrary test related to your personal preference; you can choose not to listen to me, but you can’t ever tell me that I need to “earn the right” to speak my mind. Free Speech is the right to speak on behalf of our own conscience; nobody should ever need to “earn the right” to speak their conscience. Camerin Wild demonstrates no understanding of this.
I would go so far as to argue that Sweet Baby Inc’s business model runs completely counter to the ideals of American society. The more I researched, the less this seemed like some exaggerated notion and the more it seemed to accurately reflect the crux of the problem. I’d even go so far as to argue that the whole concept of “sensitivity reading” that Sweet Baby Inc employees peddle as their business model is utterly alien to the broader US public, especially to people like myself. Fellow Americans can argue it’s fascist, Orwellian, or Communist, and they’re not strictly-speaking wrong, but I think a more precise argument is that we Americans abhor the very notion of “sensitivity reading” because it is fundamentally against our belief in the natural right of Free Speech as defined by President Thomas Jefferson and enshrined in our US Constitution. Creatives like Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii should be able to create whatever they fucking want without any censorship, as their natural right to Free Speech. Forced DEI where it doesn’t belong, especially on superior cultures like Japan, is something that should be considered intolerable and endlessly criticized on the basis of their Free Expression being diminished by an imperialist-style social project on digital media. To be clear, I have no problems using historians or hiring cultural experts of people who were born and raised from those respective cultures for accuracy and fuller depth in worldbuilding, but narratives that are changed to try to “protect feelings” aren’t taking the writing craft with any degree of seriousness, especially in Fantasy genres and their numerous subgenres. Furthermore, a lot of these arguments in favor of censorship are clearly borne of ignorance; despite how much of a meme it has been made by a few US Conservative Youtubers, facts need to matter more than feelings, if we want a clear understanding of problems in society that need to be fixed. I can’t help but notice that many of these Canadian and European businesses peddling DEI measures don’t seem to have a firm grip on the origins of these value systems and their historic and contemporary consequences. The censorship of adult women’s sexiness is actually very disturbing due to the history behind it; Sweet Baby Inc’s censorship initiative encourages their defenders to mock anyone criticizing censorship of adult female characters of fiction as a bunch of perverts as if heterosexual men and lesbian women should feel ashamed for their natural biological functions. Suicide Squad went a step further in mocking lesbian women in particular by portraying Poison Ivy, who has gradually become Harley Quinn’s solace in finding and maintaining a healthy adult relationship after being repeatedly abused by the Joker in multiple new media stories related to the two, into a child. A fictional adult women known for her sexiness was turned into a child to insult viewers; the ones primarily insulted would have been lesbian gamers. Sweet Baby Inc has only demonstrated that they don’t even question the assumptions of vilifying female sexuality of adult women and then turning an iconic sexy adult woman like Poison Ivy into a child. They did not demonstrate the capacity to recognize that they’re unquestionably espousing the same values as Christian Churches that are notorious for being child pedophile rings on a global scale. And if you’re offended by that statement, then you’re showing more concern for your feelings than the seemingly endless and ongoing fact that multiple denominations of the Christian faith continue to successfully protect child rapists across the world and remain protected by so-called “Western values” that you glorify as morally good. Censoring adult female or male sexuality is a sign of immaturity and the consequences of organizations that have followed such anti-sexuality views towards adults, such as the Catholic Church and numerous Protestant Churches, has been the rape of children for thousands of years. That’s a statement of fact. American Atheist Sam Harris said it best:
As such, the belittling and staunch vilification of men and lesbian women for having healthy biological functions towards adult female bodies reeks of the same impositions of thought-policing by glorified pedophile cults like the Catholic Church. You can go ahead and insult me for liking sex-positive representations of adult women in entertainment media and call me a pervert all you want; all I’m ever going to think of you is wondering how much of a closeted pedophile you are, especially if you’re a Christian espousing these views just like the glorified pedophile cults that espouse the value systems that you were brainwashed into believing were morally righteous. At best, you’re a pedophile apologist given every iota of information we now know of the consequences of your religious value systems of Christianity. Go ahead and insult me and demean me; all I’m going to be thinking is that you’re hiding something nefarious just like your pedophile Christian priests have been for over two-thousand years when they extoled those “Western value systems” that you champion as morally good and ended-up doing unmitigated harm to children throughout the world. Even for you redditors defending this practice, if I see you insulting any other redditor who complains about the censorship of adult women, I’m going to just assume you’re secretly a pedophile or a pedophile apologist; just like your Christian priest who preached those pedophilic values to you that you wholeheartedly believe in because you think a magic man in the sky will determine your afterlife for it and fear a laughably childish belief in eternal damnation. In other words, you’re both a pedophile apologist and a self-centered asshole justifying your pedophile cult by accusing people who have nothing to do with your pedophile cult of being the cause of your Christian priest’s actions. After an overwhelming legacy of two-thousand years of raping children that you continue to pretend has nothing to do with the pedophile cult that you worship beyond secular laws, the onus should definitely be on you. It’s more than justified for any thinking person who can see the obvious harm created by anti-sexuality value systems ridiculing healthy and natural reactions to adult women’s bodies. By the way, Free Speech is my right and I don’t give a fuck about your feelings, you creepy, deluded, pedophile apologists. If you argue against adult women’s bodies in fictional art, then that’s all you really are, a pedophile apologist pretending you’re making a moral difference by espousing the same systems proven to spread pedophilia across the world to do unspeakable harms against children. You’re angrier at me for calling you out on your bullshit than you will ever be for your priests raping your own congregation’s children. That’s your moral worldview and you think I’m crazy? Seriously, think about that; you think me being an “asshole” for calling you out on your dumbass bullshit is more worthy of ridicule than your priest having access to and plausibly raping your child. Oh, wait! Let me guess! You’re going to ignore the conservatives of your cult blaming Trans people as scapegoats for your cult’s actions to justify your slacktivism by admonishing people on the internet complaining about DEI / Woke censorship, while you intentionally ignore Transgender killings perpetrated by the conservatives of your pedophile cult? Way to go, Woke Christian Liberals! You’re totally the ones being “attacked” with your feelings being hurt, while Transgender people keep losing their lives because of your hateful religious cult’s belief system! Put more fictional Transgender people in gaming media, that’s totally going to stop violent, extremist conservatives from hunting down and murdering real life Transgender people; what could possibly be wrong with that logic?! It’s not as if you’re blaming gamers for two-thousand years of hateful religious belief structures vilifying Trans people from a glorified pedophile cult that you still have faith in! Oh yeah, “see ourselves in media!” and ignore reality while you do it and pretend that you’re making a positive difference in the world! Flawless logic!
The final portion of Camerin Wild’s video essay seemed to argue from the point of view of authority and positive heroic behavior; the Sheriff Bart of Blazing Saddles is made to seem like a positive role model, while Django is criticized for not trying to lead other Black people during the time of slavery. There’re several problems with this argument and they seem to be a result of Camerin Wild’s lack of familiarity with US culture. I can’t go into all the problems, but I’ll try my best to examine the cursory issues that I find with it. Django’s story wasn’t a fictional reenactment of a slave rebellion; it was revenge and rescue story of Django trying to save his wife and getting revenge on his White torturers. What would building such a civilization within the Continental United States even look like and what exactly would prevent the US Federal, State, and local government from brutally crushing it? What form of government would it even have? Why wouldn’t it unify slave-holders with the Northern States with arguments that US territorial integrity needed to be maintained? Moreover, the institution of slavery is sadly all that Django and his wife have grown-up under. They have an idea of personal freedom; but putting their lives further on the line, and his wife Broomhilda risking further rape, for what would be a city-state that’d be ruthlessly crushed by their White oppressors seems like folly within the historical context. It would likely only last two or less years and then they’d be either killed, raped and killed, or tortured and killed and so forth. Furthermore, why is the onus on Django and Broomhilda to do this and not anyone else? Expecting victims to be noble people, just because they’ve been victimized, is putting a burden on them that the people on the sidelines aren’t even willing to commit to, while they turned the other cheek to systems of oppression. Suffice it to say, Wild’s argument doesn’t make coherent sense, because Wild is using superhero film logic on a historical fiction story and Wild even compared it to superhero films in their critique. Unfortunately, the vast majority of superhero films are intended for children, not adults. Quentin Tarantino’s films, like others such as Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick, are highly valued in US society because they’re more mature and franker about social issues than others attempting to do social commentary or depict a philosophical critique; moreover, they can also be fun films because the character’s have their own individual perspectives on the circumstances that they’re forced into. Just because Tarantino tries to make it fun in some portions, doesn’t mean that he didn’t take the historical backdrop and institutional oppression of the era seriously.
When briefly skimming other GDOC videos, like the one about having an unlikable protagonist in video game stories, I was struck by the odd assumptions about the arguments. In both the latter-half of Camerin Wild’s videos and the few other videos I briefly skimmed, the focus was on utilization of the best tropes, the presentations argued for a purpose of removing “harmful” tropes, and there were arguments about why Cloud Strife is a positive example of an unlikeable protagonist. Tropes are treated as a serious portion of storytelling in the presentations I took the time to watch sections of or skim. I can’t be sure if this speaks to ignorance of good story structures or a cultural failing with predominately Canadian-based video game companies, but tropes are just general-consensus interpretations of someone’s work. Tropes aren’t a real component of stories at all; they’re just popularized beliefs due to viewers seeing similar concepts in various forms of entertainment media. Tropes may not always be consistent due to the utter lack of clear conceptualization of them, often tropes can have competing definitions, and tropes are more defined by public will than narrative structure. For example, the concept of Yandere traditionally meant characters like Yuno Gasai from the manga and anime Mirai Nikki being so fanatically devoted to their love interest, that they’d kill anyone who hurt their love interest. That was what the trope meant. This original definition has gradually been ignored to the extent that any female anime character going psychopathic is now interpreted to be a “Yandere” even when they aren’t acting on such behavior in fanatic devotion to their love interest. In my opinion. what matters more is a character’s personal motivation and the conflict that unfolds in relation to that motivation. I would argue that there’s an unappreciated trope in mature stories produced by US culture that Japanese anime made for adult audiences shares and which Canadian DEI companies seem completely unaware of. This is just my opinion from observing some of the most thought-provoking and intellectual forms of US and Japanese media come from more Machiavellian-style protagonists; whether people want to call them anti-Heroes, villain protagonists, pragmatists, or whatnot. There seems to be characters who have self-interested views; they’re willing to disrupt, challenge, and harm oppressive systems but recognize their own mortality and adapt accordingly in their own form of resistance after doing damage to those systems. They don’t advocate for reform, they don’t believe that’s possible, and instead focus on harming the system to meet their self-interests and then choose to leave to preserve their own interests. Their interests can have a diverse range of moral positives and negatives, but the main purpose of their story is ultimately to achieve their self-interests. Examples of this type of character in US stories range from Django himself from Django Unchained, Walter White from Breaking Bad, and Naru from Prey (2022); a diverse set of characters from different historical periods of US culture, and with different moral paradigms; yet, ultimately, they’re all striving after their own self-interests and in some cases, enlightened self-interests. In Japanese anime, it would be examples like: both the protagonist and first major antagonist of Death Note, Lelouch vi Britannia from Code Geass, Edward Elric (likely, to the surprise of some of you), and even Son Goku. Their moral beliefs are different, but they’re after their own enlightened self-interests as the main goal. Saving the world can become part of that, and a compelling reason in stories like Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, but they’re a component of achieving their true self-interested goal. After all, the world has to remain in existence to achieve any self-interested goal in most stories. Now, I could argue that this is a “trope” and not a personal opinion, but what is the actual difference apart from an appeal to popularity of the concept? A trope is just a popularized idea to help people unfamiliar with good writing to begin understanding it. They’re just tools; they shouldn’t necessarily be the focus for making good storytelling. What matters is character motivation, conflict, the believability and accuracy of the worldbuilding in historical fiction, and the intrigue or creativity in more fictional-oriented worlds.
Sweet Baby Inc’s business model may actually be a net-negative for entertainment companies that want to make major sales. A surprising problem about the conflation of so-called “Western values” is that it has obscured the fact that Canadians overwhelmingly lack any history of forming the ideas of the highest-grossing media franchises on public record. The vast majority of people who succeeded in creating the idea that resulted in the highest-grossing franchises were overwhelmingly American, Japanese, British, and French. Canadians were only a handful. Now, there should be two important caveats to rule out bias for that statement: first, the media listed in the Wikipedia article can only apply to countries that have had lengthy recordkeeping to verify sales that are readily searchable in the English language. That means, if the two most populous countries, India and China, made media franchise sales of over $100 million or more, then there’s likely no plausible way to record it in a systematized way, especially if the private companies and governments within those countries had no interest to do so. That would also be true for various South American and African countries. The people on Wikipedia making these lists likely don’t know or have no means of reading non-English translated sales records too. Second, over half of the handful of Canadians (about five or six people) who created or co-created highest-grossing franchises were dual citizens. In other words, the bias should have been in favor of Canada. Canada would have had the same advantages over other countries in terms of technology, but they still failed in making franchises in the billions and the Canadians who did were usually influenced by cultures outside of Canada. This problem is even worse for the list of best-selling fictional authors, there is only one Canadian, Arthur Hailey. He was a dual citizen of Britain who spent the first twenty-seven years of his life in Britain. This is even more damaging for Canada’s credibility of being able to propagate mass market, global appeal for fictional franchises. It’s even worse for “Canadian philosophers” as their ideas are simply parroting British and US philosophical ideas by their own admittance:
The list of Canadian philosophers is also nothing compared to either US or British philosophers. They’ve conceived no philosophical ideas of their own at all and a few of the philosophers listed are actually living in the US or Britain. As I research more for this, I’m honestly dumbfounded by the chronic idiocy of an entire civilization as it exists right now. Even the supposed list of inventions adds “discoveries” and inventions that may not really be inventions, but changes in social concepts, as if Canadians are desperately trying to protect their feelings and desire to be seen as equal to other countries that it wants to view as its peers:
It may seem as if I’m contradicting myself, since I pointed to the Constitutional Monarchy of Great Britain as having examples of highest-grossing media franchises and an abundance of philosophers. I can only answer based on my own limited understanding of British society, but this may have more to do with contemporary British society having implicitly adopted to the Enlightenment value of Voltaire as a core assumption of their society. While it wasn’t codified into their laws, this enlightenment value in Free Speech seems to have been strongly argued in favor of; I know Christopher Hitchens and many other British critics certainly argued in favor of it during debates on topics of Free Speech. Salman Rushdie risks his own life in defense of it and received some of the highest honors in British society for doing so. Yet, this pervasive social view in Britain doesn’t seem to exist in Canada from what I can find. Canada may be one of the US’s largest trading partners right now, but its export of DEI consulting initiatives due to the ignorance and conflation of cultures by Canadian companies, Japanese companies hoping to make better sales in “Western” markets, and several European countries confusing their own Eurocentric values for US values has resulted in a bewildering mess without accurate understanding of the multiple layers of social context that have been conflated. The simple fact is that Canadian DEI consulting groups created to police people’s Free Speech via sensitivity readers is an alien concept that goes against what we Americans perceive to be our natural rights. Canadian censorship initiatives that are “obvious” and seemingly unassailable to Canadians is fundamentally against our natural rights as Americans and the proof is enshrined in the writings of Thomas Jefferson, the Third President of the United States. To the average American this seems obvious, to the average Canadian this possibly seems like some bizarre exaggeration of some loophole or social quirk due to their lack of familiarity. They may even falsely assume there’s some legal loophole that they’re not privy to in order to circumvent this “obstacle” to their economic interests because that’s how their society exists. That’s the culture shock, because we Americans value it as sacred; it is something that the government and other people have no right to take away. Attempting to police people’s Free Speech is incontrovertible proof that an inferior culture is ignorantly attempting to exercise power over US society writ large to us. If this had been an Islamic monarchy like Saudi Arabia attempting to police our speech with so-called “global standards” in our media consumption, then Americans would have mocked it to the point of being untenable. Yet, because these initiatives are from a predominately White, Christian monarchy that exists north of the US; the majority of Americans are now viewing it as the fault of Far-Left Americans and not the foreign nationals from Canada. These foreign nationals from Canada show no regard for our Free Speech rights and consider it “obvious” that we should obey their primitive top-down views of Free Speech that they believe is “obvious” because of how they grew-up in their monarchy. The only reason you would laugh at those statements is because you would prefer to believe a predominately White civilization can’t be backwards when it never became a republic like France and still recognizes itself as part of a monarchy under the British crown’s rule. What part of that is not a statement of fact? As far as I can see, Japan is being imposed upon by the inferior culture of Canada too and confusing Canada’s primitive views with so-called “global standards” of “Western” media. The problem was the conflation of values under the umbrella terms of “Western culture” and “Western values” itself. We see this conflation everywhere; Americans rightly ridicule English-speaking Twitter users who argue about certain forms of Free Speech being “illegal” but exactly where are such arguments coming from and who are the ones arguing such nonsense? There’s this pernicious belief that it’s uneducated Americans or Far-Left Americans “brainwashed” by US universities, but English-speaking Canadians who have no concept of US Free Speech values would make a lot more sense as the ones arguing such totalitarian value systems more than fellow Americans. It seems to be the case that we Americans are actively experiencing this culture shock everyday and not recognizing it appropriately as culture shock due to our ignorance of how utterly lacking in culture, civilization, innovations, and philosophical thought that Canadians really are. That’s not some attempt to dehumanize Canadians, it’s a fact based upon Canada’s own lack of ability. Essentially, Canadians really don’t have a culture and have no unique contributions whatsoever. Of course, we Americans don’t recognize Canadian history in our schoolbooks, can Canadians even be said to have a history when they’ve done absolutely nothing unique at all apart from maybe war crimes? They have no history of unique social ideas that progressed human civilizations and they contributed nothing innovative to humanity in terms of inventions unless the creator or co-creator was a dual-citizen or left Canada to live in the superior culture of the US. They’re not even really a country, they’re Great Britain’s forgotten colony pretending to be a democracy to feel relevant. I’m tempted to joke that Khalistanis’ of Canada would be better served establishing a Khalistan in Canada, since Canada has no unique civilization or culture of their own and would probably benefit from a mix of Dharmic and Abrahamic philosophical thought finally giving them some semblance of uniqueness. I know how offensive that joke sounds; but I literally tried looking for anything unique or innovative from this so-called civilization and found nothing that was purely of Canadian civilization’s influence. Every Canadian I could find who made a breakthrough had left the country or was a dual-citizen of another country. It’s like the ultimate form of self-negation in one of the most self-distorted and confused political systems of a people who have no fundamental ideas of who they even are as a civilization. Canadians have no unique culture of their own and have done nothing good for humanity at all. Even Saudi Arabia has contributed more to scientific innovation than Canada. Now, Canadian DEI consulting companies like Sweet Baby Inc seek to spread their nonculture into US society under false pretenses and ignorant assumptions about Canada that utilizes terms like “Western culture” to make their primitiveness seem more universal than it is.
An examination of Sweet Baby Inc’s credentials reveals serious problems too. Apart from two caveats that have diminished influence or their influence is perhaps not played at their strengths, Sweet Baby Inc’s writers seem to lack writing talent and ability with maybe two exceptions. Most of their employees seem split into two categories; the majority of their American employees have no college degrees whatsoever and the majority of their Canadian employees (who seem to outnumber the American ones) have degrees in either theater or marketing. There are no other social science degrees among their employees from what I could find. Furthermore, a crucial question should be asked, by what measure can one be considered a competent “sensitivity reader”? What does the criteria even look like? In fact, what even is the criteria of so-called “sensitivity reading” that Sweet Baby Inc purports to do? All it seems like is worthless censorship to me. Kim Belair has a lengthy history of writing, but her degree from Concordia University is a Marketing degree:
Her co-founder David Bedard received two Marketing degrees from McGill University:
The third co-founder, who left after three years with the company, Ariadne MacGillivary, has a Bachelors in Classical, Ancient Mediterranean and Near-Eastern Archaeology and she seems one of the two most accomplished people who would probably do a decent job with worldbuilding a fictional story given her credentials:
The video games that she’s made after leaving Sweet Baby Inc seem to be positively reviewed and gamers generally don’t seem to dislike her. Honestly, she may have been one of the only two creative people in the entire company judging from her and Camerin Wild’s credentials. However, whereas Ariadne seems to have left to pursue her creative interests, Wild doesn’t seem to be playing at their strengths and may have misapplied their talent in such a way as to cause serious problems that destroyed their company’s image, even beyond the incompetence of trying to do “sensitivity reading” for US gamers. I want to be clear that, from what I see, Sweet Baby Inc employees only seem to create stupidly bad stories when working in the company, whereas outside of it, it’s just sort of… meh writing, but not overtly poor in quality like your typical Sweet Baby Inc-influenced game. There is a transgender woman who works on romance short stories in her spare time to middling success and a bilingual Sweet Baby Inc employee who seems to have left and moved on to another studio. I think both of these people just wanted to do a job that had some relation to their hobbies and didn’t expect it to blow-up into a political storm. As far as I can see, the romance stories by the Transgender woman seem to stick to their fields of interest when they’re writing for themselves and I haven’t seen any backlash from the writer who left Sweet Baby Inc. It should also be noted that Transgender writers who are simply doing their job and not forcing a DEI agenda aren’t receiving waves of backlash like the DEI-agenda driven ones, even insofar as Sweet Baby Inc’s employees. Therefore, I would argue that the more right-wing oriented criticisms of Transgender identity being the cause should re-examine their beliefs and reassess the facts about Sweet Baby Inc. This brings me to Kazuma Hashimoto, someone who does seem to fit the criticism of a grifter. For example, how can anyone claim to be a person who examines pro-imperialist propaganda and politics, when you do not list any sort of college degree on your Linkedin account? I fail to understand how that makes sense. On what basis are you doing research and for what field of interest when it comes to imperialist propaganda? Kazuma Hashimoto doesn’t necessarily need a degree, but what research studies have they read into these topics to give an informed opinion on them to critique them?
Kazuma Hashimoto is an American as far as I can see, but he mentioned that he lived in Cordova, Alaska. I decided to look it up and found that Cordova is uniquely locked in and requires a plane to leave the town. Most jobs immediately outside of the fishing city would be in Canada due to proximity. Hashimoto likely got involved and was influenced by Canadian culture as a result due to the US government and society failing to provide Cordova, Alaska with equal opportunities of employment for people who wish to leave the fishing town. Also, I want to be clear, Kazuma Hashimoto changing their first name to better fit their personal identity is a normal step in affirming a Trans identity, but while they have every right to do so, changing their last name and presenting themselves as a cultural consultant for a civilization that they know nothing about is shady behavior. Outside of knowing how to speak Japanese, he seemingly never went to Japan judging from the current evidence, and he decided to speak on behalf of Japanese culture and people as a cultural consultant… that’s a grift. It also speaks volumes on the level of sophistry and lack of integrity of Kazuma Hashimoto’s character to have done this. If you all recall, Kazuma Hashimoto had written a Polygon article in July 2020 that I had criticized about Japanese politics that they knew nothing about, while secretly being in contract with one of the competitors of the game that they were criticizing via Sweet Baby Inc since April 2020. Polygon notoriously didn’t report on Ubisoft’s horrible misogynistic culture as now evidence was revealed of a permissive culture of sex abuse in the same month and year of July 2020 that Hashimoto wrote that hit piece. In other words, Hashimoto tried to present themselves as some sort of political or cultural expert on Japanese politics while having no college degree to attest such a claim, they had written a hit piece on the developers of Ghost of Tsushima by attempting to imply they were incompetent in their Polygon article, they made derogatory remarks accusing Japanese politicians of being White Nationalists because Hashimoto was genuinely too stupid of a person to understand what the fuck “Alt-right” meant and that it was a term coined by White Nationalist Richard Spencer in his hopes of creating a White ethnostate by killing all ethnic minorities in the US, and finally, he was genuinely so stupid of a person that he actually believed that spreading lies in a New York Times article where the journalist trusted his word on good faith would somehow magically change the reality of the situation of an entire country disliking Ubisoft’s failed idea for a gaming product. That is textbook behavior of what a grifter does; thinking they can “fake it till they make it” without any real knowledge to back-up their pernicious claims. It’s absolutely pathetic and destructive; it has irreparably cost the credibility of the NY Times, Ubisoft, Polygon (but, let’s face it, Polygon never had credibility to begin with), and Sweet Baby Inc’s employees’ future career prospects if they ever wish to move on from the company. The damage is done.
However, I want to make something clear: it is absolutely disgusting and unfair to label this behavior as mental illness because Hashimoto identifies as a man after his transition. We live in a world where billionaire CEOs like Elizabeth Holmes, Samuel Benjamin Bankman-Fried (SBF), and Bernie Madoff destroy the lives of millions of people, including their own families, with their fraud. And, let me just ask this: why is it that when Chris Kindred does something truly contemptible like his harassment of Youtuber Smash JT or his harassment campaign against the curator of the Sweet Baby Inc Detected Steam page, he’s just an asshole but when Hashimoto lies about their credentials, they’re accused of suffering from mental illness? I think it’s fairer to say that, regardless of background, many Americans have learned to copy the behavior of successful billionaire grifters as a way to become rich and famous because these billionaires’ crimes continue to go largely unchecked and it should be noted that grift has increased substantially on just Youtube alone.
This brings me to the absolute worst person among them all; Chris Kindred. Despite specious rumors, I’ve found no evidence to support the claims that he was fired from Sweet Baby Inc on his various social media accounts; from his Twitter, to his personal website where he made a spelling error, and his Linkedin; it all states that he’s current. Here’s what I found:
It seems the rumors were just that; rumors. This worthless human garbage’s only former employment seems to be that he quit teaching. His degrees are in Illustration and Game Design, he has no other degrees listed on his Linkedin. I see no evidence of any Social Science or Humanities degrees and the fact that he sought employment in Canada where he’d likely be making considerably less than if he were working in his home country of the US speaks to his lack of talent. His decision to contact Smash JT’s old employer speaks to his lack of respect for professional boundaries and social maturity. Apart from Kindred’s ability to say outrageously hateful comments after famous and beloved people pass away in a laughable bid to make himself famous, he doesn’t seem to be particularly intelligent or talented. At least Kazuma Hashimoto can be said to have succeeded in their grift for about four years. Kindred’s only talent seems to be attracting people like Sweet Baby Inc’s management who wish to save face and being protective of his self-sabotaging behavior for whatever reason.
Finally, the most well-educated and current member of Sweet Baby Inc who would be better served moving on to something that suits their talents. I don’t understand why Camerin Wild is wasting their talent and misapplying it. Their GDOC video made them seem like a grifter, because they spoke of Tarantino films and Blacksploitation by pretending to know what the fuck they were talking about by speaking for the Black American social context. If they had spoken of their own experience as a Black Canadian, then that would have had value, but it’s the equivalent of being a Black Brazilian and trying to speak for the experiences of Black Mexicans or being a White French person and speaking for the experiences of the White Irish people. Camerin Wild is Canadian, their education is in East Asian studies and not US history of Blacksploitation or any sort of Black cultural studies, and their research during their presentation was inept and lacking in meaningful criticism as a result. There’s nothing wrong with Camerin Wild or even Kazuma Hashimoto talking about whatever they want, that’s their natural right. The problem is that they do no real research for topics they’re unfamiliar with, they appear to use their own ethnic background as some sort of shield to talk out of their ass about topics they haven’t researched, and peddle their own narrow-minded views and act as if it’s equivalent to actual research. They deserve to be called out on it and it calls into question what methods Sweet Baby Inc even uses for arguing on the basis of accuracy and clarity. It’s entirely possible Kim Belair simply lacks the research knowledge to understand why this is important. That’s their prerogative and they have no one else to blame but themselves when it fails. I’m of the opinion the entire project of Sweet Baby Inc was doomed because of how “sensitivity reading” is so fundamentally against the natural rights of Free Speech as conceived by Thomas Jefferson and believed in by the vast majority of Americans like myself.
To be clear, this is not an attempt to dogpile hatred towards Canadians writ large, but rather to highlight the cultural differences that are very real and remain unrecognized between Americans and Canadians. These cultural differences determine everyday personal freedoms, their understanding of what Free Speech even is as a coherent social concept, and their lack of ability to form genuine self-governance independent of monarchic rule in their political system. We shouldn’t have any contempt for our northern neighbors and their opaque, primitive, and uncultured ways of living under a monarchy that pretends it is not a monarchy in order to lie that they’re equal to our superior culture in the US. We should have empathy for their limitations compared to our superior culture and our superior thinking abilities as Americans. Sadly, Japanese companies gave them the benefit of the doubt and didn’t realize how backwards their civilization under British monarchic rule really is. These doe-eyed Monarchic Primitives with their Monarchic Primitivism unfortunately negatively impacted genuinely superior cultures like Japan via pretending they were intellectual equals to their Lords and King of Great Britain and their intellectual betters here in the US. As their intellectual betters, we must help guide Canada to a more civilized society or they will continue to impugn our superior culture with their genuinely inferior monarchic-subordinate intellect and monarchic culture; for that matter, it would be best to recognize people like Kazuma Hashimoto and Chris Kindred as redcoats who have betrayed their American culture to support the philosophically and culturally inferior ideas of Canadian monarchy. Sadly, Canadian monarchists have proven superior in one category, whereas they recognize their genocide of Indigenous people with a Truth and Reconciliation commission where they’ve apologized for the mass death toll, especially of Indigenous children. We Americans still refuse to recognize and apologize for our own even in our own courts to the families of our Indigenous service members who continue to serve the US faithfully while never being given truly equal rights and freedoms in the US. In this single but vital regard, the doe-eyed primitives serving a Monarchy have done more for the recognition and advancement of human rights than even us, their superiors in every other category. We Americans have much work to do, so as not to be outdone by the Monarchic Primitives of Canada.
Nevertheless, for those who will try to argue that I’m being extreme, or obnoxious, or acting like a fucking idiot for this conclusion; I would respectfully ask that you consider the following:
If a Saudi Arabian monarch went into a park in Saudi Arabia and proceeded to use his armed guards to assault, rape, and then murder one of their Saudi subjects in broad daylight and then used their political connections to get away with their crime; would you consider this proof of a backwards country by the standards of a Republic?
Now, if King Charles III of Britain visited Canada, went into a Canadian park, and ordered his guards to assault a Canadian citizen whom he proceeded to rape and kill in broad public, and then used his power over the Canadian Constitution with the declaration that the entire Canadian legal system was vested in his power as King over the country to get away with raping and murdering a Canadian that he picked at random, then would you consider this proof of a backwards country by the standards of a Republic?
If you’re still defending this unequal system with pathetic, anti-democratic excuses; then Charles III is your Godman just as the Saudi Princes and Kings are Saudi Arabia’s Godmen; the only difference between them and grifters is that the grifters can be held accountable by the rule of law and a monarch cannot be held accountable at all.
Lastly, in an attempt to not end this on a negative note, here’s a twenty minute video where I compare Sweet Baby Inc’s writing in Suicide Squad to Atlus Japan’s rewrite of Shin Megami Tensei V with their new story called the Canon of Vengeance, please be aware that it contains major spoilers for both games:
