Comparing JoJo with Hunter x Hunter anime

Reddit is filled with people drinking the kool-aid on this dipshit of a character. For all the claims that he’s underrated and actually really good, it’s not very convincing and the arguments in his defense are really bad. Claims that he is a noble hero don’t matter; that’s basically 90 percent of most fictional protagonists in heroic stories. Naruto, Ichigo, Yusuke, and Inuyasha are also noble heroes, but the difference is that they have real, meaningful flaws. Most Western comics have flawed heroes like Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne, and so on. Jonathan just sucks; that’s the beginning and the end of it. He only exists in reaction to Dio, the plot bends backwards to give him a teacher to fight Dio Brando, and – despite what many claim about his “successes” – he ultimately failed to stop Dio Brando; at best, he delayed Dio and that’s it.

Why did Jonathan and Erina even like each other? For all the criticisms that Goku and Chi-Chi get for their relationship, they actually make way more sense than Jonathan and Erina. We see a few scant scenes of them traveling through areas in Britain without much context, then she comes back into his life to heal him, and she randomly decides that she wants to die with him until he orders her to go save a baby and find a means to survive the ship explosion that he caused. Chi-Chi has her own sense of identity, her loyalty to her Kingdom in Dragonball, her love for her father, and she does have an interest in martial arts that she enjoys to a point. She just thinks Goku’s too excessive with it. What does Erina think of Jonathan? What are Erina’s likes and dislikes? Why exactly do they love each other? Why did she grow to care for Jonathan? There’s one bullying scene in which he helps her out, then they hang out, and then Dio steals the kiss… and uh, that’s it until she comes back later with no real explanation.

The Hamon system makes no real sense. Apparently magic breathing means you can turn leaves into a large kite capable of holding three people in the air as you float around the mid-section of a high castle in Britain. The side characters were boring, the conflict was really just about chasing a mask and destroying it, and it’s hard for me to remember the names and fights in this story because it is so boring. This was honestly one of the worst storylines I’ve ever had to endure after the mansion explosion. Everything between the mansion explosion and the ending episode of the arc on the ship can be skipped. You honestly don’t miss anything important.

So, overall… Phantom Blood gets a very generous 2 / 10 for Dio Brando being an interesting enough character, despite the fact his goals change every time he opens his mouth and monologues at the viewers. The rest of the cast, the magic system, and especially the Protagonist, Jonathan Joestar, all suck shit and you should just ignore the deluded fanboys and fangirls and either skip Phantom Blood completely or watch until the mansion explosion and then skip to the final episode of Phantom Blood, because you’re genuinely not missing anything. To give an undeniable example of how trash Part 1 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is: Dio uses laser-eyes to injure Jonathan, this laser eyes technique is never brought up again, and Araki, the author, never explains it or brings it up again. That is how piss poor the writing of Phantom Blood is. This is definitely the absolute worst JoJo story and Jonathan Joestar is genuinely one of the most trash protagonists in all of fiction.
